Applying to register a trade mark

There are several steps you need to go through when applying to register a trade mark. However that is just the start.

Registering a trade mark is just the beginning of protecting your business and your brand. Once registered you can:

  • Take legal action against any other parties who use your trade mark without authorisation.
  • Add the ® symbol to your brand – to demonstrate that you have registered a trade mark and to deter others from seeking to use the mark or similar.
  • Sell and licence the use of your trade marked products, services or brand.

How do I apply to register a trade mark?

Brandability makes registering a trade mark simple, and you can even do so online in just a few steps. There are three stages:

  • Checking whether your brand is likely to be registered as a trade mark
  • Applying to register the trade mark
  • Responding to any objections to your trade mark registration

The whole process takes around four months if no one objects to the use of the trade mark, but if there are objections, this can take longer. Once you have registered your trade mark, it will last for ten years.
